Understanding Endodontics: Protecting Your Teeth and Alleviating Pain

Care for the inside of a tooth

Endodontics focuses on the pulp and tissues around tooth roots. Deep decay, cracks or injuries can inflame or infect the pulp. An endodontist uses examination, imaging and other tests to determine whether the tooth can be saved and what treatment is appropriate.

What root canal treatment does

Root canal treatment removes damaged or infected pulp, cleans the canals and seals them. Local anesthesia is used for comfort. The tooth then needs an appropriate final restoration, often a crown for a back tooth, to protect its remaining structure.

A tooth is not automatically beyond saving because it needs a root canal. However, the amount of sound tooth remaining, the condition of the roots and supporting tissues, and any cracks all affect the outlook. Some teeth require retreatment or another approach.

When to seek help

Lingering temperature sensitivity, pain when chewing, swelling or a gum bump should be evaluated. An infected tooth may sometimes stop hurting without the infection resolving. Arrange prompt care for swelling or escalating pain; difficulty swallowing or breathing needs emergency medical attention. Complete the recommended restoration and follow-up after treatment.
