Most people assume that once a cavity forms, a drill is inevitable. That’s no longer true — and it hasn’t been for a while. At Silverlake Dental Group, we use two advanced minimally invasive treatments that can stop decay in its tracks or reverse it entirely at its earliest stage, often without any anesthesia, drilling, or removal of tooth structure. The first is Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) — an FDA-cleared antimicrobial liquid that kills the bacteria causing decay and simultaneously hardens and remineralizes the softened tooth structure, arresting the cavity where it is. Application takes just a minute or two per tooth, requires no injections, and has no recovery time. It’s particularly valuable for young children who aren’t yet ready for conventional treatment, patients with root surface cavities due to gum recession, anxious patients who want to avoid drilling for smaller lesions, and medically complex patients for whom minimizing invasive treatment is a priority. The treated area does turn black permanently as the silver reacts with the decay — which is a cosmetic consideration worth discussing — but for back teeth or situations where clinical benefit outweighs aesthetics, SDF is a genuinely powerful tool.
The second treatment is Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus — a next-generation remineralization therapy using a patented self-assembling peptide technology that penetrates into early cavity lesions and actively regenerates enamel from within. Unlike fluoride, which remineralizes the surface of enamel, Curodont’s peptide matrix goes inside the lesion and creates a scaffold that attracts calcium and phosphate ions — the building blocks of enamel — and guides the regeneration of new tooth structure. For early-stage cavities that haven’t yet broken through the enamel surface, Curodont can reverse the lesion entirely and eliminate the need for a filling. It’s also highly effective for white spot lesions in orthodontic patients and early decay in cavity-prone individuals. Neither SDF nor Curodont replaces a filling for decay that has already progressed significantly — but caught early, they give us genuine alternatives to the drill that most dental offices simply don’t offer.
This is why regular exams and X-rays matter so much — the earlier we catch decay, the more options you have. A lesion identified at its earliest stage can often be remineralized with Curodont or arrested with SDF. The same lesion caught six months later may need a filling. Caught a year later, it may need a crown.
